[Obi-Wan nods, and then does the same. Closing his eyes, he quietly centers himself. Reaching out with Anakin to the Force. Their power becoming one as they expand their reach.

Searching, feeling, hoping, for some trace of the young woman who is a wife and friend. When there's no trace of her anywhere in Verens, the reach extends further. To the other villages on the island, and even farther. To the very edges of the island.

But alas, after quite some time of trying, they are left empty handed. There's no sign of Padme, anywhere.

Obi-Wan opens his eyes again, reflecting a deep sorrow as he looks back up at his friend and brother. His voice a whisper of condolence at their failure.]

I'm sorry, Anakin.

[Well okay, it's not at midnight or whatever hour he was born, but sometime after Obi-Wan gets home.]

[For Obi-Wan's thirteenth birthday, a big deal for all Padawans in the Jedi Order, Qui-Gon just managed to scrounge together a gift: a Force-sensitive stone from the River of Light on his homeworld. He'd always been a bit scatterbrained when it came to such things. But this time is different! This time, Qui-Gon manages a little bit of foresight in a matter that didn't directly involve some sort of mission.]

[This time, when Qui-Gon returns from his usual visit about the town and fulfilling some sort of odd-job, it's with a box. It's a tiny box, nothing to really comment on, and even the tiny cake inside the tiny box isn't the biggest of deals, but the reason behind it and the circumstances surrounding the gift make up for its overall mundane nature.]

[He just wants to cheer up his old Padawan, darn it. He deserves it.]

[Qui-Gon closes the front door behind him and calls for his friend.]

Obi-Wan?

[Ever since the talk about Anakin, Obi-Wan has been particularly melancholy and withdrawn. He absorbed himself in his work, trying to keep himself busy. Thus the apartment was even more immaculate than usual, and that table had been replaced. Not to mention he spent a lot of time meditating.

That is what he is doing now actually. Though despite his efforts a little storm cloud seemed to be hanging persistently over his head. He's sitting on his bed in his bedroom when he hears Qui-Gon call for him.]

Yes, master?

[Qui-Gon is all for meditation and reflection, especially after such an emotional episode (in the most literal sense), but Obi-Wan deserves a chance to explore different avenues. Like cake. Everyone likes cake. Most of everyone, at least.]

[He doesn't go to fetch Obi-Wan from his room, and instead continues to call out to him while he places said cake on their brand new table.]

Could you help me with these groceries?

[...That's as good an excuse to get his former Padawan out of his room as any, right?]

[Well, he certainly can't deny a request like that. It takes him a few moments, but Obi-Wan finally does emerge from his room. The dark circles under his eyes suggesting that he hasn't been sleeping very well.

The nightmares recently had come back with a vengeance.

Though when he comes out, he pauses in confusion. He doesn't see any groceries, but instead rather a... cake? He gives his master a puzzled look.]

What's this?

[Qui-Gon grins and sweeps his arms as if he were presenting some sort of extravagent spread of food.]

Happy Birthday.

[Excuse him as he just stares dumbly.]

It's not ... Is it?

[Guess who forgot his own birthday. Shockingly.]

[His eyebrows arch up high, both in reaction to what Obi-Wan said and how he looks.]

It isn't like you to forget. In fact, I seem to remember a certain thirteen-year-old who couldn't wait to inform me it was his birthday.

[That actually drew a bit of a smile from Obi-Wan as he thought back on that memory.]

That was a long time ago.

[He then looked at that cake again a bit sheepishly.]

I don't know what to say.

[Qui-Gon matches Obi-Wan's smile with his own and gestures to a chair.]

Take a seat while you think of something.

I'll fetch us some plates.

All right.

[And still smiling, he sits himself down and stares at the cake. When was the last time he had actually eaten one of these? Oh wait...]

I think the last time I had cake was at Dex's. He was still in business last I knew.

[Qui-Gon can't help but chuckle at the memory of the Basilisk. He had fond memories of Dex, compounded by the nostalgia of that old diner from Didi's days of owning it.]

[He starts to set the plates and silverware on the table as he speaks:]

Good for him. I'm glad to hear he's doing well.

[And that would be Obi-Wan getting the first slice. It's the polite thing to do, what with it being his birthday and all.]

[Qui-Gon lowers himself into a seat before speaking up again, this time poking juuuust a bit of fun at the cooking at Dex's. Not that he could do any better, in fact, Qui-Gon's cooking was notoriously worse than anything experienced in all the galaxy, but still.]

I hope you survived the encounter relatively unscathed.

[Obi-Wan chuckled and took the plate with his slice of cake gratefully.]

Yes, well, Dex is a good friend and I have to try to be polite.

[He then took a bite of cake, nodding a bit as he decided he liked it.]

Besides, I did like to indulge in nostalgia now and then. Dex would often sneak me a piece when you weren't looking.

You assumed I wasn't looking.

[That sure is a knowing glance as Qui-Gon cuts and serves himself some cake.]

[But it's one that's also accompanied with a smile.]

[Obi-Wan nearly choked on a piece of cake as he started to laugh.]

You knew? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

You weren't always the best at being subtle, Obi-Wan.

[Qui-Gon chews thoughtfully and with far more grace while he considers his next words.]

You have gotten better at it, thankfully.

[Obi-Wan cleared his throat and managed to get his food down the right pipe this time.]

I would certainly hope so. Anakin, however, is even worse at it than I ever was.

For some reason, that doesn't surprise me.

[He takes another bite, completely serene even with his gentle jabs at their young colleague.]

I'm sure it's gotten you both into quite a bit of trouble over the years.

[Like, honestly, ten minutes after this ends...]

[He doesn't LIKE using this method of contact, but he was left scratching his head after talking with a stranger who said he was a friend of Obi-wan and well... hi. Let's chat.]

[There is a soft focus on the man, and then a careful voice.]

Uh, Obi-wan? It's Finn. Got a moment?

[Well this is kind of out of the blue. Obi-Wan hasn't spoken to Finn in some time. Not that he minds or anything.]

Certainly, Finn. What can I do for you?

[Is it. Is it really out of the blue? Or did he not know someone named Qui-gon was going to go talking to people about one thing or another.]

I don't mean to intrude like this, I was just curious about something.

[some unease seeped into his words.]

Do you know a Qui-gon? He mentioned he was a friend of yours.

[Oh... yes. Now it makes sense. Qui-Gon did you scare this poor boy?]

Yes, he was my master. I take it he's spoken to you about the meeting.

[Not SCARE, so much, but he didn't set him at ease.]

Master? Like, Jedi Master? I didn't realize you master was here. I uh, yeah. I asked if there was something I could do for him and he said 'eventually, but let's meet first.' I don't mind meeting him? But... I don't know. He started with 'I'm a friend to Obi-wan' and I suppose I wanted to check that first.

[he had suspicions. You can't blame him for double checking things.]

Yes, exactly. I was his apprentice.

[Obi-Wan pauses though at what Finn says next. He might not be able to hear the sigh, but the Jedi is making one. Master could you sound any more creepy? No he doesn't blame you Finn.]

Its all right, Finn. I can speak for his sincereity. Though if it would help, I can come as well if you still plan to meet with him.

Huh. First a Darth and now your master. This place is getting crowded from our space.

[Exactly! See, Finn isn't just worried for no reason! Big guy sounded creepy, okay? (And he doesn't even know he's a big guy, he just has a good voice). Finn sighed a bit though, like... 'okay, this is more reassuring.']

No. No, that's okay. It's... dumb, I suppose, checking in with you like I'm some small cadet still. I said I would go but after a bit it didn't sit right and I just wanted to... make sure he was who he said he was?

[He says that like he's not even sure if that was his reason but he's also pretty sure it was...]

So, uh, sorry to have bothered you with this, but thank you.
