It's understandable. He has never had to question the trappings of the environment in which he was raised. He may feel like he has to justify them rather than simply explain them. I welcome any further questions you might have, though I myself am biased in much the same way - I was not raised within the gentry, and my perspective on their social and political workings is not favorable for reasons both overarching and personal.
I realize now that perhaps I overstepped in telling you his given name. I had assumed it was known, since the man named Daryl knew him as such. I will be more careful with my presumptions in the future.
